Milliradian Distance: How It Works

A milliradian isn't some exotic measurement cooked up for military applications. It's simply one-thousandth of a radian—the natural way to measure angles. What makes it practical for distance estimation is the math that falls out of it: at one milliradian, an object appears to span one unit of size for every thousand units of distance.

The Formulas

Distance from MIL
Distance = (Target Size ÷ MIL) × 1000
The 1000 multiplier converts the milliradian relationship directly to distance units.
Reverse: Finding MIL
MIL = (Target Size × 1000) ÷ Distance
Useful when you know both distance and size, and need the angular measurement.

Example Calculations

Target Size MIL Reading Distance
1 meter 1 MIL 1000 m
0.5 meter 2 MIL 250 m
2 meters 4 MIL 500 m
1.8 meters (human) 3 MIL 600 m
36 inches 1.5 MIL 609.6 m
