HP to Torque Calculator

Understanding how horsepower relates to torque helps you make better decisions about engine performance. These two measurements describe different aspects of the same power output, connected through RPM.

Key Insight

A 200 HP engine at 2000 RPM produces more torque (525 lb-ft) than the same 200 HP at 6000 RPM (175 lb-ft). This is why trucks operate at lower RPM — they need the torque for pulling heavy loads.

Formulas Used

HP to Torque (Imperial)
Torque (lb-ft) = (HP × 5252) ÷ RPM
The constant 5252 comes from converting power units based on James Watt's original definition of horsepower.
HP to Torque (Metric)
Torque (Nm) = (HP × 7127) ÷ RPM
The constant differs for metric units because 1 HP = 745.7 watts.
Reverse Calculation
HP = (Torque × RPM) ÷ 5252
Works for converting torque back to horsepower.
