kW Per Ton Calculator
kW per ton tells you how much electrical power a cooling system uses for each ton of cooling it produces. It's a straightforward way to compare efficiency between different chillers, air conditioners, and refrigeration units.
Lower kW/Ton means better efficiency. A typical chiller runs at 0.5-0.8 kW/Ton. Older systems might run 1.2-1.5 kW/Ton or higher. Upgrading equipment can cut energy costs significantly.
What is kW Per Ton?
A "ton" of cooling equals 12,000 BTU per hour — roughly the amount of heat needed to melt one ton of ice in 24 hours. When we say a system uses 1 kW per ton, it means the equipment consumes 1 kilowatt of electricity to deliver that ton of cooling capacity.
This ratio matters because it directly impacts operating costs. A system running at 0.6 kW/Ton costs half as much to operate as one running at 1.2 kW/Ton, assuming the same cooling output.
