RMS vs PMPO in Audio Equipment

If you've ever shopped for speakers or amplifiers, you've probably seen two very different power ratings: RMS and PMPO. One speaker claims "100W RMS" while another boasts "1000W PMPO." Both could be describing the exact same speaker. Let me explain what's actually going on here.

The Conversion Formula

While there's no exact conversion, industry practice uses this estimation:

PMPO Estimation
PMPO = RMS × Peak Multiplier × Number of Channels
*Peak Multiplier typically ranges from 10-20x
RMS from Electrical Values
RMS Power (W) = Voltage² ÷ Resistance
RMS Power (W) = Current² × Resistance
*Used when you know voltage/current and impedance
Peak Voltage Relationship
Peak Voltage = RMS Voltage × √2 (approximately 1.414)
*Useful for amplifier headroom calculations

Worked Example

Let's say you're looking at a stereo speaker system (2 channels) rated at 75W RMS per channel:

Given: 75W RMS per channel × 2 channels = 150W RMS total

Using 15x multiplier:
PMPO = 150W × 15 = 2,250W PMPO

So a "2250W PMPO" system is really a 150W RMS system - much more realistic!

Quick Tip:

If a manufacturer only advertises PMPO and hides the RMS rating, that's a red flag. Quality brands proudly display their RMS numbers. When in doubt, ask for the RMS specification or look for independent reviews that measure actual power output.
