Pound Mass to Pound Force Calculator

Convert pound mass (lbm) to pound force (lbf) using gravitational acceleration. Calculate force for any environment - Earth, Moon, Mars, or custom gravity.

Mass to Force Calculator:

Under standard Earth gravity, 1 lbm equals 1 lbf. On other planets, the force changes based on local gravity. Select your environment or enter custom gravity.

Pound Mass to Pound Force Calculator

Converting pound mass to pound force is something engineers and physics students encounter regularly. While they sound similar, they measure completely different things. Mass tells you how much matter something contains, while force tells you how hard that mass pushes down under gravity. This calculator helps you convert between them accurately.

Quick Note

On Earth, 1 pound mass (lbm) equals 1 pound force (lbf) under standard gravity. This convenient coincidence only works on our planet. Take that same mass to the Moon, and the force drops to about 0.165 lbf because the Moon's gravity is much weaker.

Formulas Used

Basic Physics Formula
Force = Mass × Acceleration
Newton's second law - force equals mass times acceleration.
Imperial System Formula
lbf = lbm × (g ÷ gc)
Where g = gravitational acceleration and gc = 32.174 lbm·ft/(lbf·s²)
Under Standard Earth Gravity
1 lbm ≈ 1 lbf
This equality only holds when g = 32.174 ft/s² (standard Earth gravity).
