Mbps to Hz Calculator

The Mbps to Hz Calculator helps you figure out the bandwidth needed to transmit data at a certain speed. It's a handy tool for network engineers and students who need to understand how data rates relate to frequency requirements. The key factor here is spectral efficiency, which tells you how many bits can be sent per Hertz of bandwidth.

Quick Example

If you want to transmit 100 Mbps using QPSK modulation (which has a spectral efficiency of 2 bits/Hz), you need at least 50 MHz of bandwidth. That's because 100 Mbps divided by 2 bits/Hz equals 50 MHz. Higher order modulations like 256-QAM pack more bits per Hz, requiring less bandwidth for the same data rate.

Formulas Used

Basic Bandwidth Formula
Bandwidth (Hz) = Data Rate (bps) ÷ Spectral Efficiency (bits/Hz)
This formula calculates the minimum bandwidth needed for a given data rate and modulation.
With Coding Rate
Effective Bandwidth = Data Rate ÷ (Spectral Efficiency × Coding Rate)
Coding rate accounts for error correction overhead (e.g., 3/4 means 3 data bits for every 4 transmitted).
Including Guard Band
Total Bandwidth = Calculated Bandwidth × (1 + Guard Band %)
Guard bands prevent interference between adjacent channels.
