kWh to Amps Calculator

Electricity bills show usage in kilowatt-hours, but electrical panels and circuits are rated in amps. Converting between them isn't straightforward because energy and current measure different things. This calculator bridges that gap using voltage, time, and system parameters.

The Conversion Formulas

The conversion works in two steps. First, energy becomes power by dividing by time. Then power becomes current using voltage and power factor.

Step 1: Energy to Power
Power (kW) = kWh ÷ Hours
Single-Phase Current
Amps = (kW × 1000) ÷ (V × PF × η)
PF = Power Factor, η = Efficiency
Three-Phase Current
Amps = (kW × 1000) ÷ (√3 × V × PF × η)

Example Conversions

Energy Voltage Time System Current
2 kWh 230 V 1 hr Single 8.7 A
5 kWh 230 V 2 hrs Single 10.9 A
10 kWh 400 V 3 hrs Three 12.0 A
15 kWh 120 V 2 hrs Single 62.5 A
20 kWh 415 V 4 hrs Three 13.9 A
