Gallons to Tons Calculator

Converting gallons to tons requires knowing what liquid you're dealing with. A gallon of water weighs differently than a gallon of diesel or honey. This calculator uses density to give you accurate weight conversions for shipping, storage, and industrial applications.

Why Density Varies

Water weighs 8.34 lb per gallon. Gasoline is lighter at 6.07 lb/gal, while honey is much heavier at nearly 12 lb/gal. This difference comes from how tightly molecules are packed together in each liquid.

Formulas Used

Gallons to US Tons
Weight (Tons) = Gallons × Density (lb/gal) ÷ 2000
Divide by 2000 because 1 US ton equals 2000 pounds.
Gallons to Metric Tons
Weight (Metric Tons) = Liters × Density (kg/L) ÷ 1000
For metric calculations using liters and kilograms per liter.
Reverse: Tons to Gallons
Gallons = Weight (Tons) × 2000 ÷ Density (lb/gal)
Useful when you know the weight capacity and need volume.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Pick a substance from the dropdown (water, fuel, oil, etc.)
  2. Enter the volume in gallons, liters, or cubic feet
  3. Click Calculate to see weight in tons, pounds, and kilograms
  4. Switch mode to convert from tons back to gallons
  5. Use advanced options for custom density or batch calculations
