CFM to HP Calculator

When designing ventilation systems, fans, or blowers, engineers need to determine the mechanical power required to move air. CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) measures airflow volume, but converting this to horsepower (HP) requires understanding the system's resistance and efficiency. Our CFM to HP Calculator simplifies this calculation for HVAC professionals and equipment designers.

The Brake Horsepower Formula

The calculator uses the standard fan power equation:

Brake Horsepower Formula:
HP = (CFM × Static Pressure) ÷ (6356 × Efficiency)
Where:
  • • Static Pressure is in inches of water (inH₂O)
  • • Efficiency is expressed as a decimal (e.g., 0.60 for 60%)
  • • 6356 is a conversion constant for standard air conditions

Example Power Calculations

Here are examples showing how airflow, pressure, and efficiency affect horsepower requirements:

Airflow (CFM) Static Pressure (inH₂O) Efficiency (%) Power (HP)
500 1.5 55 0.23
750 2.0 58 0.41
1,000 2.0 60 0.52
1,200 2.5 62 0.80
1,500 3.0 63 1.27
1,800 3.5 64 1.89
2,000 3.0 65 1.45
2,500 4.0 66 2.52
3,000 4.0 70 2.70
3,500 4.5 68 3.52
4,000 5.0 72 4.63
4,500 5.5 71 5.95
5,000 5.0 75 4.39
6,000 6.0 73 6.91
7,000 7.0 76 9.08
8,000 8.0 74 12.97
9,000 9.0 77 16.49
10,000 10.0 75 21.05
12,000 12.0 78 30.77
15,000 15.0 76 49.34
18,000 18.0 79 71.64
20,000 20.0 77 86.84
25,000 25.0 78 134.62
30,000 30.0 76 197.37

As you can see, doubling the airflow doesn't double the horsepower requirement - it depends on the pressure and efficiency as well.
